Tipp reject under 20 proposal

September 25, 2008
Plans to scrap the under 21 grade at inter-county level and replace it with a new under 20 grade have been opposed by Tipperary county board. The proposals from the taskforce on burnout to alter the grade were emphatically rejected at Tuesday night's board meeting. Football board chairman Noel Morris said the under 21 grade had provided some of the best games down the years and questioned why a motion to scrap the grade was again up for discussion after a proposal to introduce an under 19 grade in place of minor and under 21 was defeated at Congress last April. He added that the under 21 grade was first proposed at club level in Tipperary in the early 1960s before becoming an inter-county competition in 1964 with Tipp winning the first All-Ireland hurling title. Regarding the Hurling Development Committee's proposed restructuring of the senior hurling championship, it was agreed to wait and see how the debate is going elsewhere before deciding to allow Galway and Antrim entry into the Leinster championship.
