A FL: Donaghmore Ashbourne shade tight game

Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-10 Rathkenny 2-6 Hosts Donaghmore Ashbourne won this ACFL 2A game by the narrowest margin after trailing by five at the break, last Wednesday evening, September 24th. The hosts were quickest out of the blocks with two points inside the first three minutes. However, following a brace of wides, the visitors replied through an Owen Elliott seventh minute point. The hosts responded to open the gap back to two on nine minutes. On eleven minutes, Rathkenny went in front after a lovely move involving centre back Paul Courtney and Richie Timmons. Full forward John Donegan was on hand to catch the centre and finish calmly to the net. Both teams played a running game and by the nineteenth minute the hosts had edged back in front with two further scores. Richie Timmons levelled matters with a free on twenty-two minutes. Three minutes later Thomas Martin was on the edge of the square to connect to a Colin Curtis centre. Full forward Donegan slotted over two points in the final two minutes of the half to leave Rathkenny 2-4 to 0-5 up at the interval. Donaghmore Ashbourne made a great start to the second half when a highball was collected on the edge of the square and finished to the net within a minute of the restart. Thomas Martin steadied Rathkenny with a point a minute later. It proved to be Rathkennys only score for 24 minutes. The hosts kicked over a free on thirty-seven minutes and with nine minutes remaining had edged back in front following scores on 42, 43 and 51 minutes. Rathkenny levelled matters with a Timmons free with four minutes remaining but the hosts got the winning score from a free two minutes before full time. Rathkenny - J. Martin; M. Macken, D.
