Connaughton welcomes O Flatharta's return

September 25, 2008
Westmeath's All-Star nominated goalkeeper Gary Connaughton has warmly welcomed Tomas O Flatharta's decision to remain on as manager for a fourth year. The Tubberclair clubman, who conceded just four goals in this year's league and championship, claimed the Kerryman's reappointment has given the Lake County players an enormous boost ahead of the 2009 season. "This is great news for Westmeath football," Connaughton said. "Tomas has been a huge influence and inspiration to the players over the last few years and everyone connected to the team is happy to hear Tomas is remaining on. The players have always been happy with Tomas' training methods and tactics and so on, so it's a great boost for us." Connaughton added that he wasn't surprised by the speculation linking O Flatharta to the vacant Dublin manager's post. "I think Tomas has proved himself over recent years as an excellent manager who is very capable of managing any county in the country. It was no surprise to see Dublin linked with Tomas, but thankfully Tomas is keen to continue working with Westmeath and I'm delighted that's the case." Connaughton said Westmeath have taken great encouragement from Tyrone's All-Ireland victory, having pushed the Red Hands to the wire in this year's All-Ireland qualifiers. "I firmly believe we should have beaten Tyrone that day but we let it slip away from us. I think Tyrone's All-Ireland win shows that with a bit more belief - and possibly a bit of luck - Westmeath can be up there with the top sides in the country."
