INTER-COUNTY SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009
Tyrone and Kilkenny took the All-Ireland Senior Championship honours in 2008 - well done to both. For all the other counties, it's time to draw a line under 2008 and look forward to a new campaign with renewed hopes and ambitions. With this in mind, the focus will turn to the draws for next year's provincial championships which are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 8th. The exact format of the Hurling Championship in particular will be decided on at a Special Congress scheduled for the previous Saturday.
PADDY RUSSELL BOOK LAUNCH
Final Whistle - the Paddy Russell story with Jackie Cahill - will be officially launched by GAA President Nickey Brennan at the Golden Thatch, Emly, on Wednesday evening, October 1st at 7:30pm. MC on the night will be Tipperary native Paul Collins of Today FM. All GAA followers in Tipperary and beyond are invited to attend and Russell's autobiography promises to be a Christmas bestseller. Paddy Russell is well known on the local circuit as a dual referee but he has served as a leading inter-county football whistler since 1981. During that time, the Emly native has taken charge of numerous top matches, including the 1990 and 1995 All-Ireland senior football finals. In Final Whistle, Paddy reflects on his eventual career.
The book charts Paddy's rise from humble beginnings in 1976, when he took part in a Bord Na nÓg refereeing course, to the very top of his profession. Paddy was the man in the middle for some classic games; most notably the 2005 All-Ireland semi-final between Armagh and Tyrone and the Dublin-Mayo tie a year later, but his career has also been laced with drama. In 1995, Dublin's Charlie Redmond refused to leave the field of play after being sent off and in 2006, Paddy was in charge of the tempestuous National Football League tie involving Dublin and Tyrone, which later became known as the 'Battle of Omagh.' In 2008, Paddy refereed the fiery Dublin v Meath NFL fixture at Parnell Park and on June 15th last, Kerry captain Paul Galvin slapped the notebook from Paddy's hands and received a three-month suspension. These episodes and many more are chronicled in Final Whistle.
