Wexford say no to Galway
September 24, 2008
Wexford have become the latest county to oppose Galway and Antrim's entry into the Leinster hurling championship.
At their monthly meeting on Monday night, the Wexford county board voted overwhelmingly to oppose the restructured hurling championship plans which the Hurling Development Committee are bringing to Special Congress on October 4. Dublin have also opposed the plans while counties like Westmeath and Carlow are expected to follow suit, but All-Ireland champions Kilkenny are in favour of an expanded Leinster championship, having passed the plans without a vote.
Former Wexford manager and Central Council delegate Tony Dempsey questioned the suggestion that if Galway refuse to participate in the Leinster championship, they would be omitted from the Liam McCarthy Cup.
"I'm amazed with that. What's that going to do for hurling?" he asked.
Wexford chairman Ger Doyle felt that Galway weren't making their intentions known.
"I feel that if the opposition continues to grow, Galway will just come out and say they don't want to play in Leinster. Then the status quo will remain for 2009," he said.
