League between Saints

September 24, 2008
Herts GAA The great rivalry of the past decade between St Dympnas and St Colmcilles continues this coming Sunday at Oxhey Park when they contest the Senior Football League final. The fixture commences at 3pm and promises to be an absorbing affair. The Leagrave side is having a highly successful year. They have won all trophies contested for during the season. At the start of the month in a sub-standard game they defeated Glen Rovers to win the championship. One hopes their performance in that game was not an indicator that they have peaked too soon because a week after the League final they travel to Páirc na h-Éireann to do battle with the Yorkshire champions in the first round of the All Britain Club Championship. St Colmcilles having defeated St Vincents in the senior "B" final will be full of confidence. They achieved victory without two of their star players, Paul Dolan and Neil Gallagher. With this pair back in the line out, the St Albans side will put the champions to the test. Dympnas will want to continue the winning momentum they have built up. Until Sunday evening they will put all thoughts of entry into the All Britain cauldron on the back burner. Because this League final is a contest between two proud clubs who hold great respect for each other. For sixty minutes on Sunday theirs will be a gladiatorial affair. Will the trophy make the short journey to St Albans or further up the M1 to Luton. Both sides dropped two points each on the way to the final so two evenly matched sides are competing against each other. A huge crowd should be drawn to Oxhey Park to see this encounter.
