St. Mary's Notes 22nd September 2008 http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/ Bord na nÓg City League Competition Training for both the U-9 and U-11 teams continues in Kent Park on Mondays and Wednesdays. The U-11s had two good wins over Coolera/Strandhill and Calry last week, with outstanding performances from Conor Darcy, Robert Allen, Kevin Fidgeon and Paul Kilcoyne. The U-9s were narrowly beaten again but showed lots of character with a very strong finish. Special mention must be made to the great support for both teams last week, and we look forward to the same support over the coming weeks. This year the U-9 panel is the largest ever and this is due to the outstanding commitment by the coaches and the excellent preparation delivered by the Saturday morning coaching sessions. Both teams play Ballisodare U-11/Owenmore U-9 on Wednesday 24th. U-18 - Our minors played Coolaney/Mullinabreena in ideal weather conditions last Saturday evening at St. Patrick's pitch in Skreen, in the semi-final of the championship. After a somewhat shaky start, this young team settled down and produced some lovely football and ran out winners in the end. We now play Bunninadden in the B County final in a game which has been brought forward to next Sunday 28th September in Markievicz Park. We ask all club supporters, friends and families of these young men to make every effort to be in Markievicz Park next Sunday to support and encourage this team. All players are requested to attend all training sessions on Monday and Friday. Race Night A fund raising Race Night will be held in the club house on Saturday night 27th September 2008 at 8pm. The event is being held to raise funds for our underage teams and will be preceded by the presentation of medals to our boys U14 League and Championship winning panel. All members are encouraged to attend for what should be a good night's entertainment and an opportunity to make some easy money from the inexperienced bookies we have organized for the night. Senior On Saturday last in Enniscrone our Seniors faced Geevagh in the Senior Relegation Play Off Final. In light of the proud history of the club as a senior team, and the achievements and efforts of our past senior teams down through the years, this game had heightened importance and it was vital that our senior status was preserved. In what was a hard fought encounter played out in excellent conditions, we got out of the blocks quickly with a well taken goal by Donnacha Gallagher. The remainder of the half was nip and tuck, with well taken points by David Caffrey, Stephen Coen among others maintaining the momentum and leaving 3 points between the teams at the short whistle. Geevagh started the brighter in the second half with 2 unanswered points closing the gap to the minimum. The lads seemed to up the tempo after this and further points followed from Donnacha Gallagher, Stephen Coen, Johnny Martyn and Paul Leonard. The game was put beyond doubt after another well taken goal by Donnacha Gallagher 5 minutes from the end. The final scoreline was Geevagh 0-10 St Marys 2-13. Best for St. Mary's on the day were Jonathan Davey, Johnny Martyn and Johnny Lynch in defence, Seamus Burns and Neil Smith at midfield, and Donnacha Gallagher and Stephen Coen in attack. Special thanks to Glen Young and his management team of Gerry Connolly and Seamie Hennebery who put in a trojan effort throughout the season, and especially in the last couple of weeks when the chips were down. Hopefully the team can build on the last two performances and get back into contention for silverware next year. Many thanks to all the supporters, families and friends that made the trip to Enniscrone on Saturday. Website The Club's new Website is now live at http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/.
