Castledaly and Garrycastle progress to last-four
September 19, 2008
The line-up for the senior football championship semi-finals has been completed following last weekend's quarter-final action.
After an indifferent start to the campaign, Castledaly have turned their season around and last Sunday's 0-11 to 0-9 victory over Coralstown/Kinnegad has earned them a crack at three-in-a-row chasing Tyrrellspass in the semi-final.
The southerners seized control of their quarter-final when they opened up a 0-11 to 0-6 lead in the third quarter. However, they failed to score thereafter as Kinnegad came storming back and might have snatched victory had David Kilmartin not blazed his 52nd minute shot over the crossbar.
In the other quarter-final, Paul Dillon's goal midway through the second half proved crucial as Garrycastle overcame The Downs 1-10 to 0-10. The sides had been level at half-time, but the Athlone men never looked back after Dillon's all-important strike which secures a semi-final date with St. Loman's.
The popular opinion is that it will be a Tyrrellspass-Garrycastle final, but the underdogs of Castledaly and St. Loman's will surely have something to say about that.
