'Island to face champions in SFC final
September 19, 2008
Loughinisland will face holders Mayobridge in the senior football championship final following their respective semi-final victories over Burren and Saval last weekend.
The 'Island bridged a 20-year gap when they defeated Burren 3-4 to 0-10 to set up a final date with the county kingpins. They had goalkeeper Kieran Gordon to thank after he made two brilliant saves in the closing stages to deny Sean Murdock and Eoin McCartan.
The charges of Gerard Colgan and Gary Mason laid the foundations for their victory in the opening 10 minutes when Gareth Johnston and Ben O'Reilly both found the net. Burren showed great character to get back on level terms after 19 minutes before they were rocked for a third time when John McCarthy rifled home 'Island's third goal.
Dan Gordon had a penalty saved for the winners in the second half, but they held on for a famous win.
In the other semi-final, Mayobridge showed they have lost none of their hunger when powering past Saval by 2-14 to 0-7. The scores were level on 0-6 apiece at half-time, but with Benny Coulter in inspired form and Ronan and Noel Sexton both crashing home goals, it was all so easy for the champions in the end.
