Westmeath trio attend Rules trials

September 12, 2008
Westmeath football stars Michael Ennis, John Keane and Denis Glennon are in contention for places on the Ireland International Rules squad that will tour Australia next month. The talented trio have been attending trials in Westmanstown, Dublin in recent weeks and are hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow countymen Michael 'Spike' Fagan and Dessie Dolan in representing their country. Ireland manager Sean Boylan will announce his final squad on October 4. Surprisingly, Dessie Dolan - who is a veteran of the hybrid game - has been overlooked on this occasion. The Garrycastle man was first selected for international duty as a 20-year-old in 1999. Eyebrows have also been raised at Gary Connaughton's omission, while the knee injury which curtailed Martin Flanagan's summer involvement ruled him out of the running.
