Mountnugent Advance to Semi Final By Noeleen Douglas
Quarter final junior championship Mountnugent v's Shannon Gaels Kingspan Breffni Park Sunday 7th Sept 2008
Mountnugent 2-11 Shannon Gaels 1-10
With hope, hard work and a long awaited journey Mountnugent senior team took to Breffni Park last Sunday for the Quarter Final of the Junior Championship with Shannon Gaels the only obstacle in getting to the semi final. Mountnugent were a twenty nine strong team who were prepared and ready to get on the trail for silverware.
As the captains, both cousins, went for the toss it was in Mountnugent favour with the last words of inspiration from J.Lynch and M.Reilly it was game on. Mountnugent were quick to get the ball and within the first minute and a half C.Caffrey made and attempt on score resulting on this occasion in a wide. Shannon Gaels were in close pursuit and the quick thinking of Mountnugent keeper J.Givney saved a shot on goal in the 2nd minute, as both sides scrambled for the ball it was to be a free resulting from a foul on full forward E.Reilly, taken by C. Caffrey, that opened the score for Mountnugent. A second point was soon to follow with a point from play by D.Givney after the ball was caught in Mid field by C Caffrey . Shannon Gaels responded with a point from E.Mc Hugh and following suit just moments later for the West Cavan team was Denis Symth. Mountnugent rallied and with strong support play in the centre of the field by T.Brady, G.Patterson and E.Smith the ball soon found itself back in the hands of C.Caffrey for another point. The Defence line had their work cut out and with a team effort the backline of R.Duffy, R.Kearney and T.O'Shea for Mountnugent the Gaels were kept from close scoring opportunities. A point from play for the Gaels in the 12th minute was delivered by E.Mc Hugh as Mountnugent kept the lead with D.Givney and E.Reilly finding the black spot in the lead up tot the half way mark and it looked like Mountnugent were dominating this half in scores while the game remained evenly paced. Both E.Smith and G.Patterson made great runs for the forwards but were unlucky in their delivery but fellow team mate K.Caffery notched up another score. Mountnugent had kept off the gales for 14minutes of play and witht the ground being covered by D.Sheridan, M.Hennessey and J.Adams the Mountnugent team seemed confident, reality came back with a point in the 26th minute from G.Mc Govern for the Gaels and another just a minute later by D.O.Hara awoke Mountnugent and the game was anyone's at this stage, The Gaels showed that they may be down but not out with another point in the closing minutes and this left only a score in difference in the two sides, with the crowd's high anticipation and support the half time whistle blew and it was tactical talks all round as the semi final opportunity was just 30 minutes away.
Shannon Gaels came back strong from manager's half time talk and were shooting at the Mountnugent keeper J.Givney within 30 seconds, conceding in a free Shannon Gaels were on target with a kick from C.Mc Govern. Mountnugent soon realised they were in battle and it was A.Garry with a beautiful pass from E.Smith that opened the score for the Mountnugent side with a long punted ball into the back of the net, Moments later G.Patterson made an impressive run with the ball towards goals but at the crucial moment the ball hit off the post and was cleared by the backline, with great anticipation skills T.O'Shea scooped the ball up and passed to T.Brady and shot for goal but was to be met with the hands of Keeper P.Mc Govern.
E. Reilly chalked up another point fort he Mountnugent side and with two points scored for the Gaels it was back to battle between the two. Mountnugent were eager to put some distance in the scores and D.Givney was denied a shot on goals and with the arrival of J.Brady on the field replacing R.Caffery and G.Barkey substituting A.Garry it was hoped that fresh legs would help boost the game and keep the Gaels at bay .With 18 minutes gone it was E.Mc Hugh again for his hat trick point for the Gaels but Mountnugent retorted with a goal in the 19th minute from D.Givney which left all the supports on their feet in jubilation and the semi final was getting ever closer, but celebrations were short lived as G.Patterson was sent off for Mountnugent for a second yellow card offence, it was to be a 14 man attack for the last ten minutes of the game. Mountnugent's C.Caffrey secured a point and it looked like their spirits were lifted, both C.Caffrey and E.Reilly took shots on goals but came away empty handed as the Gaels notched up another point and it was J.Brady to equal this in the 26th minute with a point sailing over the bar. With two minutes of extra time added the stand was in silent hope which was almost quelled as Gaels full forward attacked the goal of J.Givney and almost brought a goal to the closing moments but with this and a subsequent save from J.Givney it wasn't to be. As C.Garry and F.Brady took to the Mountnugent field to replace worthy players E.Reilly and J.Adams the closing moments of the game dragged for the Mountnugent supporters and with the final whistle it was celebrations all round as Mountnugent realised they are through to the semi final for the 1st time in 5years, and with this a personal victory for many players it will be full steam at training until they meet with Templeport in the semi final on the 20th of September. A final word about the referee. Normally they are the subject of ridicule but Jimmy Galligan from Killygarry has to be complimented on his refereeing skills as he contributed in a positive way to the game by allowing it to flow freely. No one from either side had a bad word to say about the man in black.

And finally
Indian Chief, 'Two Eagles,' was asked by a white government official, 'You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.'
The Chief nodded in agreement.
The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?'
The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. 'When white man find land, Indians were running it. No taxes, No debt, Plenty buffalo, Plenty beaver, Clean Water; Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spent all day hunting and fishing; All night resting by fire with plenty to eat and drink.
Then the chief leaned back and laughed. 'Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.'
