McCloskey nominated for Derry post
September 11, 2008
John McCloskey has been revealed as one of the nominees to succeed Paddy Crozier as Derry manager following Tuesday's deadline for club nominations.
McCloskey was team trainer of the Oak Leafers in the last year of Crozier's reign and has been nominated along with Damian Cassidy, Brian McGilligan, John Brennan, Tony Scullion and Liam Bradley.
Former player Cassidy remains as the bookies' favourite for the position, but a number of media reports have suggested that the players believe that McCloskey will be well suited for the post.
Another surprise inclusion is Ballinascreen man Tony Scullion, who has four All Stars to his name in his time as a defender with the Oak Leaf County.
"I'd be very much interested in managing Derry," he admitted.
"You have to take an opportunity if you get it. But I'd have to look into the ruling, it's something I haven't thought much about."
As an employee of the Ulster Council, Scullion may not be able to take on the position as it could interfere with his duties for the assembly.
