Kingscourt's Patrick Finnegan bowed out of the race for the All Ireland 60x30 Intermediate singles title last Saturday in Kingscourt when he went down to Kilkenny's Nicholas Anthony in straight games, 21-13, 21-15. Powerful Finnegan, a former multiplie underage All Ireland champion, was expected to go all the way this season, having reached the decider in 2006. Kingscourt duo Cormac McMahon and Shane Grey went down in the All Ireland Minor doubles semi-final recently also. In other news, Paul Fitzpatrick defeated clubmate Patrick Clerkin 21-10, 21-16 in the quarter-final of the Ulster 60x30 Junior singles in Virginia last Saturday. Fitzpatrick will face another clubmate, Eddie Halligan, in the semi-final next weekend, while number one seed James Brady and Padraig Cahill are in the other side of the draw. In the doubles, Fitzpatrick and Brady team up while Clerkin and Cahill, who won the 40x20 All Ireland Junior B doubles back in March, will also be in action. The Ulster juvenile championships will get underway later in the month.
