Intermediate Championship:
Doon 1-12
Birr 0-7
On Sunday evening last, Doon recorded their third straight victory in their final group game against a battling Birr side. Selecting from a full strength panel, Doon took control of matters from the outset and with James Coughlan in majestic form at centre forward, there was only ever going to be one winner. It was Coughlan that was first on the scoreboard for Doon with an excellent point on the run following good work from Donie Ryan. Coughlan added 2 further points, one from play and one from a placed ball sandwiched by Birr,Äôs first score which was a well taken free from Sean Ryan. Further Doon points from Alec Mooney and Colm Brazil left Doon leading 6 points to one with half time approaching. Indeed the game could have been over as a contest at this point had any of Doon,Äôs three goal chances been converted, the highlight being a shot from Trevor Phlean which came crashing off the woodwork.¬? With 2 minutes left to the break, Birr formed a mini revival with 2 quick points and then had the opportunity of reducing the arrears even further from a 14 yard free which was weakly kicked into the hands of Niall Hennessy in the Doon goal. Half time score: Doon 0-6 Birr 0-3.
Doon restarted the second half in a more determined fashion and following 2 more impressive scores from Coughlan,¬?¬? the game was soon over as a contest.¬? A long searching ball from once again, the aforementioned Coughlan towards the Birr square was deftly directed to the net by Niall Kelly. With a mountain to climb in terms of a comeback, Birr did battle on but the result was never in doubt. Another point by Colm Brazil followed by three further Coughlan points (0-2 frees) ensured that Doon ran out comfortable winners on the aforementioned score line.
