Brennan: O'Connor got off on technicality
September 03, 2008
In the days after Cork's All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Kerry, GAA president Nicky Brennan has revealed that Donncha O'Connor's inclusion the replay was down to a technicality.
O'Connor had been sent off in the drawn game between the two Munster rivals the weekend prior after lightly slapping Kerry's Aidan O'Mahony across the face which would have required him to serve a one-match ban, therefore missing the replay, and four weeks suspension.
Now Brennan has explained that the Cork attacker's sending off has come to a mistake in match referee Joe McQuillan's report was the reason for the ban not being imposed, rather than the Central Hearings Committee overturning the decision to ban O'Connor.
"There was a wording in the referee's report which was such that it was impossible to impose the penalty," said Brennan.
"He got off on a technicality because of the way the referee's report was written. Of course I wish it wasn't there but let's got on with it."
However, no investigation has gone into the details of Darragh Ó'Sé sending off beforehand in the report as there was no appeal from Kerry, which saw him miss the replay against the Rebels.
