Ballybay and Emyvale book intermediate semi spots
August 26, 2008
It was a busy weekend of championship action but overall the fare an offer was somewhat mundane with the best of the action coming in the meeting of Drumhowan and Killeevan in the junior championship and Ballybay and Donaghmoyne in the intermediate championship.
The outcome of the meeting between Ballybay and Donaghmoyne saw Ballybay book their place in the semi finals along with Emyvale who caused something of a mild surprise when they defeated Aughnamullen in Scotstown on Saturday evening last. The championship action got underway on Friday evening last with the meeting of Drumhowan and Killeevan in Scotstown and a game that produced a cracking contest with Drumhowan striking for the winner two minutes into stoppage time and Killeevan left to rue a number of missed chances particularly in the second-half when they could have put some daylight between themselves and the opposition.
That win sees Drumhowan through to the semi-finals while Killeevan now join a group involving Currin, Aghabog and the winners of the Toome versus Oram replay to sort out the other two semi-final spots. Clones had already booked their place in the semi-final when they defeated Aghabog the previous weekend. The weather took its toll on the standard of play in last weekend's championship action particularly on Saturday evening in Clontibret where a difficult breeze and fairly heavy rain made both ball handling and footwork difficult.
Truagh eventually managed to keep their championship aspirations on track when they had two points to spare against a Rockcorry side who pushed the issue right to the wire but ultimately lacked sufficient fire power while Emyvale edged past Aughnamullen with the minimum to spare in an absorbing if never spectacular contest that was also marred somewhat by the adverse weather conditions.
The other game in the junior championship that was played over the weekend saw Oram and Toome finish all square at the end of a very competitive affair in Blackhill and they return to the Emeralds venue this Saturday at 2.00p.m. to see who goes through to the draw for the matches that will decide the other two semi-final places. Meanwhile at U21 level C'Blayney and Scotstown must meet again after they finished all square in their U21 league division 1 final in Emyvale on Saturday afternoon, and again a game that was marred by the adverse weather and one where Scotstown were perhaps a little fortunate to get away with the second chance.
LEAGUES.
There were a number of games played in the Credit Union senior football league over the past week that saw Latton and Doohamlet in particular in action on a couple of occasions and with mixed fortunes.
Latton had a victory over Monaghan Harps but fell to a one point defeat to Doohamlet before recovering on Sunday last for a comfortable eleven points victory over Carrickmacross. Doohamlet likewise had a number of matches, taking two points off both Magheracloone and Latton and sharing the spoils with Inniskeen on Sunday last to keep them right up there in contention for a semi-final spot.
In the other games that were played in the senior football league Inniskeen defeated Carrick Carrickmacross and Scotstown defeated Tyholland by a point to keep them in the relegation zone. Meanwhile in the minor football championship Monaghan Harps proved too strong for Cremartin, Castleblayney suffered a five points defeat at the hands of Latton, Scotstown accounted for Emyvale, Clontibret got a walkover against Inniskeen, Sean McDermotts defeated Truagh and St Patrick's got a walkover against Clones.
