With the 'tide' out this week it was back to business at Pairc Colcille with training able to resume by Tuesday night The seniors continue to train without any official fixtures but did have a useful run out against Scotstown on Sunday morning coming away with a win. The Reserves did not do so well suffering defeat at the hands of Killyclogher in the league last Friday night. Their next game is against Kildress this Friday at 7.15 at home. A large number of over 35 teams from all over Ulster have expressed an interest in competing in the Vincent Gormley Tournament and it is hoped fixtures will get underway soon. The epic journey of the Minor Grade One League quarter final against Dungannon came to a close last week and unfortunately the lads were on the losing side. However all credit must go to them and the management for what was an enthralling series of games. The experience of this will be of great benefit to them as the progress as footballers although it is hard to see in the aftermath of defeat following three games and extra time. The U-16's played Omagh and Dromore this week but despite their best efforts lost out in both. They now prepare for the championship and are well capable of challenging for honours. Their next game is away to Cappagh at 7.15 on Wed 27th and then they are at home to Strabane on Saturday at 2.00. U-13 training resumes this Thursday night in preparation for their league which gets under way on Thursday 4th September when we take on Cappagh at home in the first of our Section 1B games. An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. Notes
(week commencing 25/08/08)
Centenary News
Our club's 2008 Centenary Gala Night in the Armagh City Hotel on Saturday 22nd November continues to attract huge interest. This eagerly awaited Black Tie Gala Dinner will be a celebration of 100 years of gaelic games and culture in Moy and the parish of Clonfeacle. Among the many special guests in attendance will be GAA President Nicky Brennan. The cost of a ticket is priced at £100 per person or £1000 per table.
Those hoping to attend the Gala Night should submit their applications and monies to any member of the An Mhaigh G.A.C. Executive Committee before Sunday 14th September. Members should also note that club officials will be calling at homes in the next couple of weeks to collect deposits.
Our club's Centenary committee would appeal to all members and friends to forward them any video or dvd coverage of Moy games and events down through the years. The committee would especially like to hear from anyone who may have footage of championship finals involving Moy adult, underage and ladies teams. If you can help, please contact Simon Brady on 079 26253800.
Meanwhile, anyone who may have old artefacts, trophies, cups, jerseys and memorabilia relating to An Mhaigh G.A.C. are asked to contact Kevin Mallon or any member of the club's executive committee. It is very important that such items are brought to the club's attention in this Centenary year.
Congratulations to Liam Lynch (junior) who is the winner of our club's Centenary Poetry competition. His poem about An Mhaigh G.A.C. will be included in the Centenary Book to be launched in November. He also wins himself a county strip of his choice. So high was the standard of poems written by the Moy primary school children that it was extremely difficult to select a winning entry. We wish to thank all those who entered a poem for this competition, and each of the entries are on display in the Moy clubrooms for local Gaels to read.
Reserve A.C.L. Div 2
An Mhaigh 3-10
An Ghoirtin 2-10
Moy hopes of winning this season's A.C.L. Division Two reserve league title were boosted last Sunday afternoon when Martin Conroy and Aidan Coleman's men edged out previously unbeaten Gortin in a five goal thriller at Pairc Thír na nÓg. This was Moy's seventh consecutive win in this competition, bouncing back well from defeats in their opening two games, and are now among the front-runners for success.
Thankfully, after several weeks without competitive football, the Moy team showed no signs of rustiness. In fact, the homesters got off to a dream start when goals from Thomas Conlon and Brendan O'Neill put their side six points up after only five minutes. Unfortunately, Tommy Conlon's goal came at a price as he left the field injured just moments later. Gortin, with the help of a penalty goal, succeeded in reducing the deficit to two by the end of the first quarter but played second fiddle to a wind-assisted Moy outfit for the remainder of the half.
With Philip McQuade and Tommy McNicholl dominant in defence, and Brendan O'Neill and Conall Laverty on fire in attack, Moy managed to outscore Gortin 0-5 to 0-0 in a superb second quarter. The Tír na nÓgs used the elements well during this period, playing some of their best football this season. John Harvey and Ciaran Conroy helped their team win lots of possession around the middle third of the field, while Peter Loughran and Anthony Rafferty also got in on the scoring act. Half-Time Score: Moy 2-7 Gortin 1-3.
Any thoughts of an easy victory, though, were dispelled within minutes of the restart as league leaders Gortin clawed their way right back into contention by kicking the first four scores in this half. Points from Brendan O'Neill and Conall Laverty helped ease the pressure on Moy somewhat approaching the end of the third quarter, but a Gortin goal with ten minutes remaining put this match back in the melting pot. With only one point separating the teams, the visitors then pressed the self-destruct button. In the space of just two minutes, they had a forward sent-off and conceded a very soft goal.
Wing back Adam Currie was the man credited with Moy's third major when his rather speculative shot somehow ended up in the back of the net. It was to be the game's decisive score and, while Gortin hit back again with a couple of scores of their own, Conall Laverty's injury-time free-kick sealed a three point victory for Moy. Niall Kelly's rock solid display at full back and the introduction of fresh legs also proved crucial for An Mhaigh in the second half. The men from the riverbank showed a steely determination to claim both league points and held their nerve at a critical stage to win on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-10.
Team & Scorers: Adrian Jordan; Mark Donnelly, Niall Kelly, Philip McQuade, Declan Cavanagh, Thomas McNicholl, Adam Currie (1-0); John Harvey and Peter Loughran (0-1); Martin Conroy, Ciaran Conroy, Anthony Rafferty (0-1), Thomas Conlon (1-0), Brendan O'Neill (capt, 1-5, 2 frees). Conall Laverty (0-3, 2 frees). Subs Used: Kris Kavanagh (6 mins), Colm Jordan (35 mins) and Stephen Beaddie (45 mins). Other Subs: Dirar Jomar, Hugo Mackle, Peter McKearney, Paddy McKeown and Colm Quinn.
League Record: Played 9, Won 7, Drawn 0, Lost 2, Points 14. Remaining Fixtures: v Eskra (away) on Friday 29th August at 7.15pm; v Trillick (home); v Clann na nGael (away); v Derrylaughan (home); v Dungannon (away); v Edendork (home);.
Under 16 League
An Mhaigh 1-10
Bruach Aille 3-7
Moy Under 16s were involved in a cracking contest at home to Brackaville in the league last Saturday afternoon. Although the young Sky Blues finished on the wrong end of a 1-10 to 3-7 scoreline, their performance against a very strong Brackaville side was admirable to say the least.
Both teams deserve immense credit for producing a high standard game in terrible conditions. The players made light of the incessant rain to serve up some wonderful football and, on a day when the two sides showed wholehearted commitment, it was unfortunate that there had to be a loser. The Moy lads will be disappointed not to have at least earned a draw from this game but they can still look back on what was a most encouraging team display.
An early Brackaville goal, after Moy's Nathan Brady had made an excellent save, handed the visitors a lead they were never to lose. Yet, three first half points by inspirational team captain Eunan Deeney and good performances from Daniel Beaddie, the O'Neill brothers, Anthony McGuckin and Paddy Fox did help keep Moy in contention during the opening thirty minutes.
Brackaville led 1-4 to 0-3 at the break and their ability to grab vital goals, sometimes against the run of play, would also prove crucial in the second half. Both teams enjoyed an equal amount of possession but Brackaville were that bit more clinical in attack and opened up an eight point advantage entering the final quarter. To Moy's credit, though, the team never gave up and set up a grandstand finish.
A goal by Paddy Fox and some terrific point-scoring by the Moy lads closed the gap to just three with time almost up. Towards the end, the young Sky Blues were denied a more favourable result by two point blank saves from the Brackaville goalkeeper. Despite losing, the Moy management will nonetheless be proud of the effort shown by all their players.
Team & Scorers: Nathan Brady; Tiernan Donohue, Daniel Beaddie, Eoghan O'Neill, Anthony McGuckin, Jack Kelly; Eunan Deeney (captain, 0-5, 3 frees) and Cormac O'Neill (0-1); Ryan Dynes, Mark Gribbin (0-1), Liam Kelly, Harry Loughran (0-1), Paddy Fox (1-1). Subs: Daryl Mills, Odhran Burke and Joseph Daly.
Moy's league game at home to Eskra on Wednesday 20th August was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. For more information on Under 16 training and matches, contact Martin Deeney, Paul Dynes or Paud Loughran.
Under 13 League
Moy have been entered in this year's Under 13 League competition. The team, which will be managed by Martin Conroy and Gerry McCourt, will compete against some strong teams in Grade Two (section A). They begin their league campaign on Thursday 4th September away to Ardboe.
Moy's U-13 League Fixtures: v Ardboe (away) on Thursday 4th September at 7.00pm; v Eglish (home) on Monday 8th September at 6.45pm; v Greencastle (home) on Friday 12th September at 6.45pm; v Galbally (away) on Friday 19th September at 6.45pm; v Pomeroy (away) on Saturday 27th September at 11.00am.
Under 12 Team News
Last week was an eventful one for Moy's promising young Under 12 players and their management team. Mentor Martin Conroy explained all:
"We played Dungannon in two Go Game matches last Thursday night and were defeated in both. The 'B' team tried hard throughout, but were unable to match their bigger opponents and were defeated 13-6. Jordan Conroy, Oisin McKeown and Eoghan Kelly played well on the night. The 'A' game saw Dungannon run out 17-11 winners with ourselves contributing to that with some awful shooting and little self belief. Conor Foster and Liam Lynch played well at the back and Rory Magee scored a few points up front.
"We then went to Clogher on Saturday past for their annual Under 12 tournament. We played Galbally in our first group match and led 2-1 at half-time, but Galbally turned around and scored a couple of goals to come out on top. Aughdrumsee were our next opponents. We played a lot of our fringe players but won the match comfortably 13-6, with Ryan Casey, Eoghan Kelly and Oisin McKeown all playing well.
"Our final group game was a winner takes all match against the hosts Clogher to see who advanced to the cup semi-finals. We played superbly to win 11-9 with Declan Conroy and Ryan Coleman getting the goals and John Millar and Eoin "mugsy" Kelly performing well. The semi-final against Pomeroy was nearly over before it began with their physically bigger players hitting us for three quick goals. However, we battled on and with Ryan Coleman terrorising their defence every time he got the ball we got it down to three points during the second half. We just couldn't get that equalising goal against their excellent goalkeeper."
Under 10 Blitz
Moy Under 10 players returned to football action last Saturday when they took part in the County Go Games Blitz in Moortown. Team mentor Liam Lynch reports:
"Despite having reduced numbers due to the holiday period, the Moy squad were in great form. First up was Kildress. It was a close match which Moy won by the narrowest of margins. Players of note were Francie Kelly and new recruit for the day, Michael Conroy (U-8). Our next match was against Dungannon. Moy played with the wind in the first half and went into the break in front. However, in the second half, Dungannon took full advantage of the wind and came out on top. As usual, Cormac
Mallon played a sensational match in defence. Our final match was against
Coalisland. Moy had now got into their stride and produced a convincing win."
The following players represented Moy on the day: Cormac Mallon, Sean Lynch, Jack Campbell, Matthew Collins, Tom Loughran, Francie Kelly, Sean Farmer, Michael O'Hagan and Ronan Mallon. Also called up were two Under 8 players, Michael Conroy and Ciaran Foster. Moy Under 10s will next be in action on Saturday 30th August when they travel to An Riocht, Kilkeel for their annual tournament.

Tyrone Ladies
Congratulations to Eimear, Nina and the Tyrone ladies senior football squad on their tremendous victory over Leinster champions Dublin in last Saturday's All-Ireland Quarter-Final at Hyde Park, Roscommon. The girls succeeded in matching the achievements of their male counterparts a week earlier by demolishing the Dubs in wet conditions.
These are certainly exciting times for Moy and Tyrone GAA. Our club will have no fewer than six players in All-Ireland semi-final action over the next couple of weeks. We wish An Mhaigh pair Eimear and Nina and the rest of the Red Hand cailini the best of luck against reigning All-Ireland champions Cork in the last four.
Sympathy
Our club offers sincerest condolences to underage playing member Nicole McManus on the death of her brother, last weekend. We also extend our heartfelt sympathy to the entire McManus family circle at this time.
