All-Ireland SFC: Injury-time goals give Cork a replay
August 24, 2008

Cork's John Hayes despatches the penalty in the 72nd minute that levelled the All-Ireland semi-final between Cork and Kerry
Kerry 1-13
Cork 3-7
Two injury-time goals saw Cork come back from the dead to stage a late smash and grab at Croke Park against Kerry and bring this All-Ireland SFC semi-final to a replay.
The All-Ireland Champions looked to be cruising to their fourth successive All-Ireland final as they led by eight points with under five minutes remaining, but astonishingly the Rebels hit 2-2 in the closing stages to force another meeting between theses two rivalled sides.
Daniel Goulding's first-half goal was cancelled out by Kieran Donaghy within seconds for the Kingdom to hold a one-point advantage at half-time, but from Darragh Ó Sé's sending off on 37 minutes they had totally bossed the match until the Munster Champions hit their four crucial scores in the last seven minutes to draw the game at the death.
Donnacha O'Connor saw red for the merest of slaps on Kerry's Aidan O'Mahony, whose dramatics afterwards should see the Cork attacker's suspension rescinded for the replay, and Ó Sé could too make the All-Ireland final if his side were to get there given that the replay could pro-long the decider's date.
It was O'Connor who opened the scoring for Cork with two minutes on the clock before Colm Cooper opened his account for the afternoon with a left-footed free that sailed straight between the posts.
Cooper added his second on eight minutes, and the Champions should have stretched their lead from there but Tommy Walsh, Cooper and Aidan O'Mahony managed to compile five wides in the opening 11 minutes for the Kingdom.
It looked as though they were made pay the price too three minutes later when Michael Cussen gave a slick pass onto a rushing Pierce O'Neill 30 metres from goal who off-loaded to Daniel Goulding as he hit the deck and the corner-forward made no mistake in finding the net.
From the resulting kick-out Kerry latched onto possession at centre-field and fed Colm Cooper in the corner, who lobbed a ball between Derek Kavanagh and Kieran Donaghy on the edge of Alan Quirke's square and, between head and fist, the Austin Stacks man leaped to bundle the ball into the corner of the Cork net.
The 'twin towers' in Donaghy and Walsh both registered singles from there to establish a three-point lead as the game neared the 20-minute mark, but Donnacha O'Connor sent over a 20 metre free on the left side after some charging by Aidan O'Mahony to make sure the Rebels were within two of their opponents.
Walsh had Kerry's second goal chance well saved by Quirke, from which the deadly accuracy of Bryan Sheehan pointed the resulting '45', but O'Connor more than matched that with two points from play that saw Conor Counihan's side trailing by just one at the interval.
Colm Cooper grabbed his first point from play seconds into the restart, but Kerry looked to be in quite some bother when their inspirational midfielder Darragh Ó Sé received a straight red card from referee Joe McQuillan for striking Pierce O'Neill.
Instead, Kerry responded like Champions, and prospered. Points from Tommy Walsh and two Bryan Sheehan frees saw the Kingdom open up a five-point lead on their bitter rivals, until substitute Nicholas Murphy smashed a dig-out goal chance over the bar for the Rebels.
On 40 minutes a tussle which spilled over the side-line between Donnacha O'Connor and Aidan O'Mahony saw the Cork man lightly-slap O'Mahony across the face prompting the Kerry centre-back to fall to the floor and with that McQuillan issued the second straight red card of the day to O'Connor.
With both teams down to 14 men, Kerry were the ones who began to exploit the space and when Alan Quirke's poor kick-out landed in the arms of an unmarked Eoin Brosnan the substitute dashed forward to fist Kerry five ahead once more.
The second of Pat O'Shea's three switches, Darren O'Sullivan, got in on the act shortly afterwards with a well flighted point and Cork could well have been truly 'done and dusted' when those two substitutes combined forcing Quirke to make a strong save of Brosnan's stinging effort.
The Munster Champions looked to be flat on their feet when Tomás Ó Sé prodded forward from his wing-back duties to receive Kerry's patient defensive possession and race forward untouched to make up 40 metres and point an easy score for the Kingdom.
Another piece of excellent work from Cooper led to Bryan Sheehan pointing Kerry's last score on 66 minutes for what looked to be an unassailable 1-13 to 1-5 lead at that stage.
Even when John Miskella and John Hayes (free) sent over points heading towards injury-time it had looked as though Cork had conceded the game, but James Masters' fisted goal from a cross-field pass from Michael Cussen gave them incentive going into the final seconds.
Cork drove forward in the next attack and the ever-brave Graham Canty found himself on the edge of the Kerry square where he went across the legs of Aidan O'Mahony and dropped for McQuillan to award a 72nd minute penalty to the Rebels. A nerveless John Hayes loomed over the spot-kick as Kerry protested and when the whistle was finally blown he made no mistake in drilling the ball low into Diarmuid Murphy's left-hand corner, amazingly, bringing the game level in its final sequences.
Killian Young was presented with the chance that would have really broken Cork's heart, but the defender's effort of a point came off the outside of Alan Quirke's post and denied Kerry of another win over the Rebels at Croke Park, assuring both sides they'd be meeting again before one of them takes their place in the All-Ireland final for either the fifth or second successive time.
