Down battled past Antrim with a 0-13 to 0-9 victory in Newry this evening to book their place in the semi-finals of the Ulster senior football championship.

Conor Laverty’s side were made to grind it out against Glensmen and, in the end, the late points of Oisin Savage, Daniel Guinness, Shane Annett and Ryan Doherty got them over the line.

The Mourne men had taken in a 0-6 to 0-3 lead at half-time after having played against the wind in the first-half and they’d stretch it to five early in the restart.

The Antrim response was points from Patrick McBride and Ryan McQuillan and, while they’d five behind again, scores from Marc Jordan and Eoghan McCabe made for a nervy closing 10 minutes for the home support.

A Savage free steadied Down’s ship and back-to-back points by Guinness and Annett all but ensured their semi berth in the northern province alongside either Fermanagh or Armagh who play tomorrow afternoon in Enniskillen (2pm).
