Mayo kept things to script as they saw off New York by 2-21 to 2-6 in the Bronx to advance to the semi-finals of the Connacht senior football championship.

Ryan O’Donoghue led the way with 1-13 for the visitors, including a 21st minute goal which put his side six points to the good before eventually going on to lead by a dozen at the break.

O’Donoghue and Paddy Durcan would stretch the lead for Kevin McStay’s side early on the in the resumption ahead of New York grabbing a sorely needed goal through Frank O’Reilly in the 42nd minute.

The hosts would net again via skipper Jamie Boyle but it’d be immediately cancelled out by an O’Connor penalty which marked the Ballintubber man’s 32nd goal in championship football.

From there, Mayo were able to soundly see it out as Paul Towey, Jack Carney and the deadly accurate O’Donoghue (free) completed their tally.

Next up for the Westerners is a provincial semi-final date with Roscommon in a fortnight’s time, while New York are now Tailteann Cup bound.
