Cavan came out on top in a cracking Ulster senior football championship preliminary round clash against neighbours Monaghan this afternoon.

Injury-time goals from Gerry Smith and Paddy Lynch (1-9) secured the Breffni men’s 3-12 to 1-12 victory in Clones, where the home side lost veteran midfielder Darren Hughes to a serious looking knee injury in the second-half.

Having trailed by 0-7 to 0-5 at the halfway stage, Cavan hit the front through a brilliantly taken Padraig Faulkner goal that rocketed past the recently returned Rory Beggan to the roof of the Farney net.

Monaghan got it back level with a Michael Hamill goal with three minutes left in normal time and they’d move two in front via the points of Joel Wilson (mark) and the roaming Beggan.

However, in the 10 minutes of added on time, Smith and the deadly Lynch would come up trumps for Raymond Galligan’s team as they booked a quarter-final date with Tyrone on April 21st.
