Meath set-up a Leinster senior football championship quarter-final date against Dublin after defeating Longford on a 3-19 to 3-12 scoreline at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this afternoon.

Colm O’Rourke’s men had been coasting to victory in this one after James Conlon’s 26th minute goal had them into a 1-10 to 0-3 lead and, despite conceding a Jayson Matthews goal before half-time, they’d keep a cushioned lead after the turnaround.

The margin would be out to 10 when Eoghan Frayne (penalty) netted with seven minutes to go ahead of a frantic finish that saw Longford smashing in goals via Mark Hughes and Darren Gallagher either side of sub Cian McBride raising Meath’s third green flag.

It left the home side trailing by seven injury-time and it would end up the margin at the finish as O’Rourke’s side marched on to a last eight date with the Dubs next Sunday.

Meanwhile, Wexford started their championship campaign in style by scoring an empathic 4-19 to 0-8 win over neighbours Carlow at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

Sean Nolan, Jonathan Bealin and Mark Rossiter (2) bagged the Slaneysiders’ goals as they cruised to a provincial quarter-final date with Louth in seven days’ time.
