Louth ensured their safety in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League for next season by handing already relegated Kildare their seventh consecutive defeat this evening.

Ryan Burns’s 13th minute goal ended up being the difference between the sides at Netwatch Cullen Park, where it finished 1-12 to 0-12 in favour of Ger Brennan’s men whom sent Fermanagh down despite the Ernesiders’ win over neighbours Cavan.

Kieran Donnelly’s side came to Kingspan Breffni needing a win and a favour from Kildare in Carlow in order to pull off the great escape but, in the end, a 2-14 to 1-13 victory in Cavan Town wouldn’t be enough for them.

Ultan Kelm’s goal on the half-hour saw Fermanagh towards a deserved 1-6 to 0-4 half-time lead and the visitors would hit another from Garvan Jones seven minutes in the restart prior to a rocket at the other end from Paddy Lynch proving in vain for the already safe Breffni men.

In Ballybofey, Division 2 finalists Donegal recorded their sixth win of the league campaign by handing Meath a 1-18 to 1-10 defeat.

The home side were 0-13 to 1-5 in front when Jamie Brennan crashed in their goal in the 50th minute to all but secure their top placed finish in the table.

Meanwhile, fellow promotion winners Armagh were held to a 2-16 to 2-16 draw by Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh this evening.

A cracking encounter would finish all square thanks to Oisin Conaty’s point in the second minute of injury-time for the Orchard men, denying their Rebel counterparts a fourth win on the bounce.
