Meath manager Andy McEntee is not a fan of the new advanced mark rule.

Gaelic football is morphing into Aussie Rules according to McEntee whose team drew with neighbours Westmeath in their O’Byrne Cup clash at Mullingar on Saturday.

“I think you are going to see less goal chances,” he opined when speaking to the Irish Independent.

“I think if a fella gets a mark inside, his first reaction is going to put his hand up instead of playing on. As a result I think it will be counter-productive. I don’t like it at all.

“There are marks inside the two 50s and one in the middle of the field. It is a game of Aussie Rules.”

The Royals boss believes the advanced mark will encourage managers to adopt a more defensive approach.

“I suppose the thinking behind it is that we want to encourage a little bit more kicking. But I can’t afford someone like Michael Murphy catching a ball inside. So you play a player in front of him.”
