Tyrone won't take Peter Harte's one-match ban lying down

Tyrone will appeal the one-match suspension that, as things stand, rules Peter Harte out of next Saturday’s Super 8s opener against Roscommon.

The only negative from the Red Hand County’s point of view following today’s round 4 qualifier win over Cavan was the black card picked up the versatile Errigal Ciaran clubman.

He also saw black in the Ulster SFC semi-final defeat to Donegal and the qualifier win over Longford and three black cards add up to a one-match ban.

“Of course we will,” was manager Mickey Harte's reply when he was asked by BBC Sport if they will appeal. “I think anybody in their right mind will know that we will because I don’t think any of the three of them were for what the black card was brought in for. Where is the deliberate intent in any of these things?

“I said it to (referee) Barry Cassidy, I congratulated him on doing a good job on the game but I couldn’t for the life of me see how that merited a black card. How it could be considered a deliberate trip because why would anybody, in the position we were in, want to do that? You couldn’t say he just went to do that, that’s a deliberate trip, that was to save the day or something. It was absolutely just a tackle again and it’s interpreted as a trip.

“The one against Donegal was interpreted as some kind of trip as well which was just a mis-timed tackle. And the one against Longford was even worse because the fella actually pulled Petey down on top of him.

“It’s just very frustrating that this black card was rushed in at the start and now people have forgotten why it should be used at all. I saw plenty of examples on the field today that, in my mind, would have fitted the bill for a black card but it didn’t come.”
