Connacht U20FC: Galway too good for Rossies

July 03, 2019

Galway's Rory Cunningham

A slick Galway outfit beat Roscommon by 0-17 to 1-7 at Kiltoom to clinch a decider date with Mayo.

Padraig Joyce's charges began impressively but received an early scare when a long-range Gerry Galvin effort deceived Oran Burke in the blinding sun and ended up in the Galway net as the Rossies crept ahead, 1-1 to 0-3.

Galway, who largely controlled the game but recorded twelve wides, refused to panic and were ahead by five at the break, 0-11 to 1-3, Matthew Tierney lofting over some exquisite scores as the victors notched eight of the last ten points before the short whistle, although Shane Curran's resilient charges reeled the arrears back in to three not long after the resumption.

Top scorer Rory Cunningham and Darragh Silke continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over for the winners, who had eight different scorers on the night as they claimed a final clash with Mayo in Tuam next Wednesday.

Roscommon's Brian Derwin blasted an injury-time penalty over the bar and the losers also had Jonathan Hester sent off before the final whistle sounded.
