Big numbers turn down Offaly call-ups

December 21, 2018

Tony Leavy RIP.

Offaly chairman Tommy Byrne has revealed that up to 14 players have turned down invitations to join the county senior hurling and football squads.

Now that figure may be small in some counties, but given the small number of clubs in Offaly, it's an alarming number.

Both John Maughan (football) and Kevin Martin (hurling) have had their invitation to players turned down for a variety of reasons.

The Midland Tribune reports that Byrne told delegates that the players involved were making a huge effort, but he revealed his disappointment over those who would not commit to the county squads.

“The players that are there are making a huge effort. I am not being critical of those players who have decided not to come in and hopefully they will change their mind in the new year,” said Byrne.

“People are entitled to make their own decisions but Offaly needs everyone.”
