Jim McGuinness has emerged a surprise candidate for the vacant Galway United manager's job.

The Irish Sun is reporting that the 2012 Donegal All-Ireland SFC winning manager is in contention to replace Shane Keegan at Eamonn Deacy Park. McGuinness hinted back in January that he would focus on a coaching role in Europe after leaving Chinese club Beijing Sinobo Guoan for what they described as "personal, family reasons".

The shock development comes on the back of a proposed takeover by two Saudi Arabian businessmen of Galway United.

The Glenties man spent five years with Glasgow Celtic before being named as assistant coach of the Chinese Super League club under coach Roger Schmidt on a two-and-a-half year deal in June 2017.
