Dara McVeety has been named captain of the Cavan senior football team for 2018.

The Crosserlough clubman will take over in the role from Killian Clarke while Ciaran Brady has been handed the vice-captaincy by manager Mattie McGleenan.

In an interview with the Anglo Celt ahead of this weekend's Allianz FL Division 2 opener against Clare, Dublin-based schoolteacher McVeety addressed the issue of players not committing to the Breffni County jersey.

"There's lots of talk. I don't think players should listen to it anyway but you hear people asking about lads not coming in. If lads don't really want to be playing for Cavan, we don't really want to be playing with them.

"Everyone that is good enough has been asked into the county. I know people say there has been a big turnover of players but there's not much you can do - if players don't want to play for Cavan, that's it, you can't be begging lads to play for Cavan.

"If they're not motivated to play for Cavan, that you don't really want them playing."
