Evans in positive mood

Wicklow manager John Evans

Despite suffering a couple of heavy defeats in the O'Byrne Cup, Wicklow manager John Evans is in a positive frame of mind ahead of the opening NFL clash on Sunday.

The Garden County will host Waterford in Joule Park at 2pm and they must do so without the likes of John Crowe, Harry Wilson and Darragh Fitzgerald who are all rated extremely doubtful.

Evans told the Wicklow People that he has been pleased with the attitude of the players in training and that preparations for the league have been going well.

"Training has been good," said Evans. "We got a couple of run outs in the O'Byrne Cup and while results didn't go our way it was more about giving players a taste of the action.

"We played 32 or 33 players in those games and it was good to give them experience. There's a lot of freshness in the panel, there's a nice blend in there. It's about building a new team because the team that was there was not operating."
