Waterford football boss Tom McGlinchey says the focus remains on their National League opener against Wicklow at the end of this month.

The Deise men commenced their new season on Saturday against Clare in Dungarvan, where they slipped to a 2-18 to 1-9 defeat against the experimental visitors in Dungarvan, where they had squandered an array of chances in the opening half.

"We had eight wides and six balls into the keeper's hands," McGlinchey is quoted saying by the Irish Examiner. "We had 19 chances in the first-half. Clare took their chances and that gulf in class between Division 2 and Division 4 showed.

"That was our first football session. We've had no football because the club championship ran until December and we haven't had our players together."

He added: "League is our championship. It will be easier to talk in three weeks' time when we have everyone back but all we're focusing on now is Wicklow on January 28. That's the big one."
