Nicole Fegan takes part in the Down Scór na nÓg competition last Friday night.

Mayobridge GAC in Down has been left devastated by the tragic death of 12-year-old Nicole Fegan in a beach buggy crash outside Newry on Saturday.

A talented camogie player, footballer, handballer and musician, Nicole had taken part in the Down Scór na nÓg competition the night before the accident. The year-8 pupil at Our Lady's Grammar School in Newry was a passenger in a beach buggy which was in collision with a Toyota Hilux on the Flagstaff Road just before 3pm. Her 14-year-old friend sustained a broken leg in the crash, while the driver of the pick-up truck escaped injury.

In Friday night's Scór na nÓg competition, Nicole had acquitted herself very well in both the Ballad Group and Instrumental Music disciplines.

A statement on Mayobridge GAC Facebook paid tribute to Nicole. It read: "The Committee and members of Mayobridge GAC are greatly shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic death of our cherished Scór na nÓg member and camogie, football and handball player Nicole Fegan and wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to her grieving parents Margo and Cathal, brothers Jamie and Jason and extended family circle. Mary Queen of the Gael pray for her.

"A book of condolence has been opened in the Social Club which will be open all day (Sunday) for anyone wishing to express their sympathy."
