Shane O'Neill's club notes

July 07, 2014
Senior Men
Our senior men's run of poor results continued on Friday evening with a home defeat to Killeavy on a score-line of 4 - 16 to 2 - 5. Killeavy raced into an early four point lead before Ryan McCabe got the first point of the game for the Shanes. The away side went on to score a goal and four points with Oliver Gaughran replying for the Shanes with a solitary pointed free before Killeavy hit the last two points of the half to lead by eleven points at the break. Immediately from the throw-in at the start of the second period Killeavy surged forward and scored their second goal of the contest with Declan McDonald responding for the Shanes with a well taken point. Killeavy notched up their third goal soon after from the penalty spot and followed this up with their eleventh to lead by massive seventeen points. To their credit the Shanes kept battling away and were rewarded with a well taken goal from Connaire Mackin and a point from Oliver Gaughran which was quickly followed by another Killeavy point. Oliver Gaughran was on target minutes later with his side's second goal of the game before second-half substitute Kristian Magill fired over a great long range point. However this was as good as it got for the Shanes as Killeavy went on to score another goal and four points to run out comfortable winners. The club would like to thank The Mulberry Bush crèche for their generous and much appreciated sponsorship of the game.

Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies got back to winning ways last Sunday evening at home to Dorsey Emmetts. The Shanes started the game at a blistering pace, with the forward line in top form, taking some brilliant scores. Our midfield and defence were well on top throughout, limiting Dorsey to just a few scoring chances. With the game safe during the second half Shanes concentrated on kicking points from distance, taking some impressive scores. In fairness to Dorsey, they remained committed to the end and both teams can be proud of their efforts all through an entertaining game.

U16 Boys
Our U16 boys bowed out of the championship on Thursday evening with a six point defeat against Carrickcruppen, 2- 9 to 0 - 9. The first-half proved to be a very tight and low scoring affair which saw 'Cruppen lead by two at the break, 0 - 5 to 0 - 3, with Ciaron McMullan (2) and Eamon McCabe (1) on target for the home side. The sides swapped points early in the second-half with Eamon McCabe scoring for the Shanes before Carrickcruppen increased their lead to five with a goal from the penalty spot. They followed this up with two points before Eoin Sloan fired over a great point to bring Shanes back to within six points. Another point from the away side saw their lead increase to seven before the Shanes hit four points in a row, three from Eamon McCabe and one from Conor Magee, to get themselves right back into the game. The Shanes were really pressing at this stage to get back on level terms but they were caught by a break away goal which ultimately saw Carrickcruppen seal their win. Great credit must go to both sets of players for serving a highly entertaining game.

U16 Girls
The U16 girls are through to the Championship final following an impressive win over Cullyhanna on Saturday evening, 10 - 10 to 6 - 11. As the score-line suggests this was a thoroughly entertaining game with both sets of players giving their all throughout but it was the Shanes who were that bit more clinical in front of the posts and ultimately claim the win. The girls now face Clann Eireann in the final on either the 20th or 21st July.

U14 Girls
The U-14s girls played a very good friendly against Lurgan side Clan na Gael Lurgan last Tuesday evening in the Shanes. The highlights of the game were the fine defending of ever improving half-back line Abby Shields, Orlagh McKenna and Kirsty Murphy. Another friendly has been scheduled for this Tuesday evening but no further details are known yet. These games are important preparation for the Championship Final and big league games coming up.

U12 Girls
The U12 girls play in the U12 Championship quarter-final at home to Tir na nOg on Monday evening, 7th July at 7.00pm in the Shanes. All the girls are asked to be at the pitch for 6.15pm. It is vitally important that all girls are there for this Championship game because with a full squad of players we have a very good chance in the competition. Parents and families are also asked to come along to show their support…good luck girls and please remember gumshields.

Well Done
Well done to Oisín O'Callaghan who has been selected to run for the Ireland team in the International Schools games in Wales in the 800m and 4 x 400m relay.

Happy Birthday
A big happy birthday this week to one of younger players, Demi Evans who celebrates her 7th birthday this week.

Condolences
It was with great sadness that the club has learned of the sudden death of one of its former players, Anthony Feehan. On behalf of the club I would like to extend our sincere sympathy to all of Anthony's immediate family and his entire family circle.
