Sligo star Marren banned for a year

October 09, 2007
Sligo star Adrian Marren, who saw action as a substitute in the Yeats County's historic Connacht SFC final win over Galway in July, has been hit with a 48-week ban arising from an incident involving a referee. Marren received the one-year suspension for committing a Category 5 offence, which involved physically handling a referee. The incident took place during last month's Sligo SFC quarter-final between Marren's club Curry and Sligo town outfit St. John's. The game was notable for the fact that St. John's ended Curry's reign as county champions. In his report, referee Michael Duffy claimed that he had been interfered with by Marren and another Curry player - John Feeney - who was also given a 48-week ban for a Category 5 offence. Michael Duffy is a brother of top inter-county referee Marty Duffy, who took charge of this year's Munster final between Kerry and Cork.
