Carr and Kane to manage Down
September 24, 2006
Down are set to unveil their dream management team of Ross Carr and DJ Kane at a county board meeting in Newcastle on Wednesday night, September 27.
Carr and Kane were key members of the Mourne County's 1991 and '94 All-Ireland winning teams and will be assisted by Declan Mussen, who is a PE teacher at St. Colman's College in Newry.
The new management will be ratified at Wednesday's meeting. There had been speculation that Paddy O'Rourke would be able to reapply for the job he lost in the wake of this year's disappointing championship showing, but it's believed he has now accepted his fate.
Carr managed the Down minors for two years, leading them to an Ulster final in which they were controversially beaten by a Tyrone team that went on to win the All-Ireland title. Kane captained the 1994 All-Ireland winning side and has always been regarded as a marvellous leader.
Declan Mussen is a nephew of Kevin Mussen, who skippered Down to their first Sam Maguire Cup win in 1960. He was part of Carr's management team during the Clonduff man's spell as minor manager. Mussen also assisted Carr when he took charge of top Monaghan club side Castleblayney Faughs two years ago.
