Kilkenny's Shem Downey passes away
December 24, 2013
The death has occurred of former Kilkenny and Tullaroan hurler Shem Downey.
Aged 91, Shem's inter-county career spanned from 1946 and 1954, during which he won an All-Ireland medal in 1947 when lining out at right corner forward in the Cats' 0-14 to 2-7 victory over Cork. Among his team-mates during that era was former GAA president Paddy Buggy, who also passed away this year.
Shem also played in the 1939 All-Ireland minor final and won three Leinster senior medals. With Tullaroan, he played in five county finals, winning one in 1948.
A butcher by trade, Shem was the proud father of Kilkenny camogie legends Anglea and Ann Downey, who won 12 All-Ireland senior camogie medals each and 13 All-Ireland club titles between them.
May he rest in peace.
