A former Cavan underage footballer had to receive hospital treatment after he was allegedly bitten by an opponent during a club match.

The incident comes in the wake of an allegedly biting incident by a Dublin player on Donegal forward Patrick McBrearty.

Ramor United defender Simon Cadden is alleged to have been bitten on the ear while playing against Ballinagh in the All County football league.

The 22-year-old admitted to the Anglo-Celt that were it not for the fact that the opponent was wearing a gum shield, the injury would have been a lot worse.

"He just seemed to swoop as quick as you like and latched on to it (ear) for a second and then let go and then he pulled away," the Ulster under-21 medallist stated.

"There were two minutes left at that stage and when the final whistle went on of my team-mates said 'your ear is a mess'. I looked down on my jersey was all blood and the ear was cut bad.

"I had to go to A&E and they cleaned it up for me. It was a deep enough gash alright. What saved me was that he had a gum shield thank God.

The county board is to launch an investigation into the matter.
