Oisín's a proud and rich history
March 05, 2012
Oisín's C.L.G. are a Manchester based G.A.A. club founded in 1904. They have a proud and rich history and have competed at a high level in both Britain and Ireland throughout their 108 year. To mark their centenary year in 2004 the club commissioned a book covering it's first 100 years in existence. Pagraig Johnson was the driving force behind this book and spent many a long hour collecting the pictures and stories from past and present Oisín's club members. The result was an in depth anthology which revealed the rich history behind a club that is the oldest continuously active G.A.A. club in Lancashire and possibly Britain.
It has been 8 years since the book was published and times have changed. Information is being accessed in many ways which were not possible before. Clubs are using online resources such a twitter, facebook and club websites more and more to keep their club members in the know about what's going on. Oisín's have been one of the leaders in this respect not only in British G.A.A. but quite possibly the worldwide G.A.A. community. They have developed their own CMS (content management system) and their website oisinclg.com is the envy of many clubs and uses the most up to date web technologies. Oisín's are also very active tweeters and use facebook to connect with their club members on a daily basis.
Oisín's have recently taken advantage of facebook's new timeline feature which is due to be rolled out to all facebook profiles, pages and groups on March 10th. They have begun the long task of charting the clubs 108 year history on the timeline and are using the centenary book as an invaluable source of reference. Past members of the Oisín club include former G.A.A. President Peter Quinn, P.J. McGowan former Donegal player, manager and current chairman and the Gallagher brothers of Oasis fame. The club can boast local born members as well as members from every county in Ireland.
Oisín's would like to take this opportunity to ask all past and present members of the club to get in touch with them and share your memories and experiences so this is as accurate and in depth as possible. You can check out the timeline at
http://www.facebook.com/oisin.gaa.manchester and if you think it is a good thing give it a like and help spread the word to other G.A.A. clubs about what is possible for their clubs. Oisín's encourage all clubs to do the same and help spread the proud and rich history's of grassroots G.A.A. to a wider audience. You can get in touch by emailing
