Wicklow SFC final: St Mary's shock Rathnew

St Mary's 2-5
Rathnew 0-10

Two first-half goals from Paddy Byrne helped St Mary's spring a huge shock in the Wicklow SFC final yesterday as they overcame champions Rathnew at Aughrim.

Byrne's brace of goals saw the Saints lay the foundations for victory early on, as they led the red-hot favourites by 2-3 to 0-3 at the break.

Dual star Leighton Glynn shot over three unanswered scores from Rathnew early on in the resumption, while Tommy Gill hit two of his own to cut the deficit to the minimum.

A salient score from Declan Nolan edged Karl O'Dwyer's side two in front in the 59th minute and despite seven minutes of injury-time Rathnew could only muster a white flag in reply through Glynn, which was enough for St Mary's to claim a historic win.
