Down hurling manager Gerard Monan
Down manager Gerard Monan is contemplating his future in the wake of Sunday's shock Ulster SHC semi-final loss to Armagh.

Asked by the Irish News what his future intentions are, he replied: "Ah well, I'll have a think about it anyway. We'll make no decisions yet. The county board might not want you, they might want rid of you, or the players want rid of you!"

The Ballygalget clubman said Sunday's defeat highlights the need for greater work at underage level in the Mourne County.

"Armagh have been pushing and pushing hard and they're reaping the rewards for it now, you have to give them credit," he continued.

"Down need to have a look at it, especially underage level, development squads, do a lot more work, if they want to succeed at this level because the standard is just getting higher and higher all the time.

"Natural ability won't carry you through any more, you've got to do the extra. Some of the players, there's a lot more in them too."
