Hurler of the Year Lar Corbett admits he considered emigrating in search of employment before opening up a new bar in Thurles this week.

The pub - named Lar Corbett's @ Coppingers in the town - will be officially opened at a gala event on Saturday week, when last year's All-Ireland winning Tipp manager Liam Sheedy will be in attendance.

The 30-year-old Thurles Sarsfields star, who hit a hat-trick of goals in the All-Ireland final win over Kilkenny last September, is an electrician by trade but has struggled for regular employment since the beginning of the downturn.

And he admits that he pondered the possibility of leaving the country before

He said, "How many times do you hear people are going to Australia, people are going to America or London and they seem to be getting on very well? They seem to be flying it. I don't know whether they're just ringing back and saying it but they seem to be getting on well and they spend a long time over there.

"Every idea would go through your head. I was 30 there two weeks ago. Hopefully I have one or two years left with Tipperary and a few years left with the club and I'd like to fulfil my ambitions living at home."
