Croke Park to pay tribute to McGuinness

The late Philip McGuinness
GAA president Christy Cooney has said that the Association will honour the memory of late Leitrim footballer Philip McGuinness.

McGuinness passed away on Monday evening after sustaining a head injury while playing with his club Mohill against Melvin Gaels last Saturday. His funeral will take place tomorrow.

Asked about commemorating his memory, Mr Cooney said: "Yes, we'll talk to the Leitrim county board about that. We were planning to have an opening of our refurbished GAA Museum at Croke Park tomorrow and we cancelled it as a mark of respect.

"I was in Leitrim last night at the wake and Padraic (Duffy, GAA Director General) is going down on Thursday for the funeral.

"I thought the chairman of the county board paid great tribute to him on radio yesterday. I know that Leitrim county board are very upset about it, about his death and will do everything in the power to support the family," he added.
