Cribbin to continue as Offaly football boss

Tom Cribbin
Tom Cribbin has been reappointed Offaly football manager for 2010. The Clane native was parachuted into the job after two rounds of this year's NFL following the resignation of Richie Connor in the wake of a much publicised player walkout. Cribbin's initial appointment was just until the end of the season, but after expressing an interest in continuing in the post following last Saturday's unlucky All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Wexford, his reappointment was ratified at a county board meeting this week. The former Laois manager is intent on rebuilding the Offaly team, having already begun the process in this year's championship which saw the Faithful County suffer defeats to both Kildare and Wexford. And he is determined to ensure that the team receives the best possible preparation before the 2010 campaign. "You have to look at the whole set-up. From the backroom team you can provide to the facilities you provide. The cost of training a team even in pre-season and getting them into gyms. I know the players are working on their own but it's still structured and measured by physical trainers," he said. "We might be meeting two nights a week after Christmas but trust me, the players have two or three months work done at that stage. They're working on their own or they are working in groups of five or six and it's done in a structured way because you can't get the fitness levels teams are getting now and not be doing training before Christmas." Cribbin went on to say that he felt that a high level of physicality was now essential for a team to be successful. "It's fairly obvious if you look at what happened to Westmeath and Laois in the Leinster semi-finals. If we don't bring ourselves up to that level, there is going to be a two-tier system in football like there is in hurling," he added.
