Hurney brothers make history

Waterford's Gary Hurney
A small piece of history was made last Sunday when the three Hurney brothers - Gary, John and Patrick - lined out for the Waterford hurlers in their Waterford Crystal Cup win over UCC.
It's believed the Hurneys, who are regulars on the county senior football team, became the first three brothers to represent their county in official competition in both codes at senior level.
In the past, the Whelans of Portlaw - Jackie, Frankie and the late Mossie - along with the Walshs of Ballyduff Upper - Mossie, Richie and Michael - all played on the same county senior hurling team. In football too, the Walsh and Kirwan families from Kilrossanty provided three brothers on several occasions to different Waterford senior sides, but county board PRO Joe Cleary believes the Hurneys created a first on Sunday.
"I have spoken with several other long-time GAA activists countywide and they have also been unable to name any other family to match the feat of the Hurneys," he said.
Another brother, Laurence, who is the eldest in the family, is also a regular member of the Abbeyside and Ballinacourty senior hurling and football teams, and has played senior football for Waterford.
