McNamee scoops top Offaly award

Rhode midfielder Alan McNamee has been named as Offaly's Footballer of the Year for 2008. It is the second time the county star has picked up the award, having previously been selected in 2005. He also won the Under 21 Player of the Year award in 2002. His younger brother Niall is also a two-time winner of the senior accolade in 2004 and 2006. The intermediate award goes to St. Brigid's Ken Casey, who is a previous winner of the minor award. The handball award is also destined for Rhode parish with David Hope being honoured. Walsh Island legend Willie Bryan will be inducted in the Hall of Fame. The former midfield great was the first man to captain Offaly to Sam Maguire glory in 1971 and was also a key member of the side that retained the All-Ireland 12 months later. The annual awards ceremony will take place in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore on Friday, January 9. Medals will also be presented on the night to the Offaly football panel which won the National League Division 4 title this year.
