The late Greg Fives

October 17, 2008
Waterford GAA is mourning the passing of former football manager and hurling selector Greg Fives after a long illness. Fives, who died on Wednesday, was a hugely respected figure in the county, having coached various club and county sides in both hurling and football over a long number of years. Described as a "larger than life character", he managed the Waterford footballers at the beginning of this decade before going on to join Justin McCarthy's hurling management backroom team in 2002 when the Decies won the Munster title after a 39-year absence. In more recent times, he managed the Waterford under 21 and intermediate hurling sides and his own beloved Abbeyside. His funeral will take place in Abbeyside at 10am tomorrow. May he rest in peace.
