Does GAA get fair coverage compared to soccer and rugby

GreenAndRed,

"If you bothered to look Keeper you'd see Ormond posts on plenty of sports here"

I didn't say he doesn't GreenAndRed or did you bother to read my post? My point was he didn't back up his claim with any evidence, merely just an "oh no you didn't ...oh yes I did" pantomime-type retort. And that simply isn't good enough in an election year.

Racing at Leopardstown and the 4 football semi-finals, 2 in Leinster and 2 in Ulster are the main sports events in Ireland today. Logic suggests that RTE will at least provide highlights of those 5 events on this evening's 6.01 News and Sport. The Joburg Open will also be covered as will the English Premier League and the Masters Snooker. So still plenty of time to show highlights of the O'Byrne and McKenna Cup semi-finals. Football supporters dream on.

The Hoganstand Match Tracker and RTE Radio 1 provided excellent coverage of this afternoon's football and hurling. Sadly the same cannot be said of that old reliable the 6.01 News and Sport. Again no video coverage of any of the matches even though one of the McKenna Cup games attracted an attendance of close to 6,000. Not bad for January. The 6.01 programme covered 7 sports in all (Soccer, Horse Racing, Golf, Football/Hurling, Snooker, Rugby Union and Cycling) and the only report not backed up with video coverage was of course the Gaelic Games report. Last Sunday they covered 6 sports (Rugby Union, Football/Hurling, Soccer, Horse Racing, Golf and Snooker) and once again the only one not supported by video was the Gaelic Games report. It appears it's only our sports they are not prepared to pay for highlights for.

Strange, given the level of criticism RTE directed at Tyrone's Tiernan McCann for feigning injury against Monaghan, to see the complete lack of criticism on RTE of the many instances of genuine foul play which occurred in last weekend's European Rugby Union competitions. There were 6 alleged instances of foul play last weekend including a red card for dangerous play. The other 5 leave the Tiernan McMann incident in the halfpenny place.
1. A Glasgow player allegedly punched a Northampton opponent.
2. Another Glasgow player allegedly grabbed the testicles of the Northampton No.9.
3. A Clermont player allegedly pushed the referee.
4. A Saracens player allegedly eye gouged an Ulster player.
5. A Newport player allegedly bit a Castres player.

Not one incident has been mentioned on the RTE 6.01 News and Sport. No criticism. No debate. Compare this to the treatment handed out to Tiernan McCann and Philly McMahon all across the Irish media. Clearly Rugby Union in Ireland remains a protected species.

At 8.48pm this evening RTE Sport's Twitter feed announced the Final score of the McGrath Cup Final as Cork 1-12 Clare 1-07. The only problem is that the game didn't actually finish for another 11 minutes when the score was Cork 1-15 Clare 1-09. Another example of shoddy journalism when dealing with our games.

Madman, this is totally unacceptable and the whole country waiting with baited breath for the exact outcome.

Imagine the whole country thought Cork won by 5 points when in fact they won by 6!

There are 5 rugby playing nations in Europe with with 37 teams between them. Irish teams smashed out of the main competitions this weekend. Now when leinster and munster were benefitting from an English and French apathy towards the Heineken cup they belittled the secondary challenge cup and rightly so. Sure 20 out of the 37 clubs are in the heineken cup. Half of those left are not bothered by the mickymouse secondary comp. That Was Until Leinster Ended Up In it. Watch now while rte big up connacht making it to the quarters. Rugby spin will make a victory out of irish club rugby's disaster. Has anyone else noticed how rte have began to put far more emphasis on the irish teams in the magners league? Anything but admit that the the bandwagon has come to a halt.

No mention last night on the RTE 6.01 News and Sport of the McGrath Cup Final. No mention on tonight's 6.01 News and Sport of the McKenna Cup Final. Over 13 minutes of Sport between the two programmes and not even 1 second of Gaelic Games.

What a game. Hats off to both Tyrone and Derry and to Armagh TV for the live stream.

RTE's failure to even mention the McKenna Cup Final on last night's 6.01 News and Sport looks even worse when you consider that the BBC sent a commentator (Thomas Niblock) and co-commentator (Enda McGinley) to the game. If you missed the game live on Armagh TV you can see over 30 minutes of BBC highlights plus interviews on the BBC website. Worth a look. Some great teamwork and scores. Did RTE even send a reporter to the game?

4750 paying adults in the Gaelic Grounds for the Munster hurling league final, and over 7000 at the McKenna Cup final, but neither on the radar of RTE TV News this evening. Beyond a joke at this stage.

Rte were too busy sending cameras to heineken cup games between french and English teams to cover any of the gaa this weekend. Wouldn't it be hilarious if the rugby bandwagoners and like the so called greatest soccer fans in the world began to support the non pro 12 teams.

Eight sports covered on this evening's RTE 6.01 News and Sport. Horse Racing. Soccer. Rugby Union. Golf. Football. Hurling. Tennis and Rallying. (In that order) And for the third Sunday in a row the only sports not backed up by video were football and hurling. At least they're consistent.

Also failed to stand at attention when reading GAA results, severe lack of respect for national games

Ah Madman did you not have the stopwatch ready to see how many seconds it took them to read out the results?

It will be interesting to watch RTE Six One news and sport this evening. Given that there has been such a focus on Rugby.
Surely it will highlight the record defeat for Leinster, the dismal performance overall of the other Hino provinces and finally the recurring problem of concussion in Rugby. Or perhaps they might try and distract the viewing public from these failures by highlighting a negative in GAA. Note the Six One news has only covered gaa football 4 times so far this month. No preview of All Ireland club Semi Finals in fact no mention of that or other GAA competitions. I wonder what will happen. ;-)
