GAA announce SKY TV deal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

No harm at all! RTE might actually buck up their act now with their coverage.

I'm genuinely shocked, I never thought they'd give exclusive Island of Ireland access for any Championship matches to Sky, nevermind 2 quarter-finals. That's exclusive, if your county is playing in one of those quarter-finals, you either have to have Sky or go to the pub. I thought at most they'd get non-exclusive right.
As for the streaming deal for the USA, I'll wait to see how much it costs. The free-to-air deal in Australia does sound great, pity they couldn't do a similar deal with one of the basic cable networks in the US. But that's not the main story here, its meant as more of a distraction I think.
I'm still hoping this exclusive Sky deal is an April fools joke. Otherwise I've no idea what the GAA is anymore.

Its official. 31 live games for RTE(all provincial finals) Sky will show 14 live games(8 saturday night qualifiers and a AI QFs included). Irish in Britain can watch 20 games from comfort of own homes. Also going to let USA viewers watch games on RTE digital at home. Probably the most progressive rights package ever. Takes away the need for irish overseas to go to pub to watch games.

Yeh but the need for us at home without sky to go to the bloody pub.

Well done GAA, ***holes.

Did anyone just see the Gaelic games report on Skysportsnews ?

Brilliant :D

I cant wait. So delighted this deal has been struck.

A midweek highlights programme aswell, You can bet your bottom dollar it will be better than the muck we put up with on free-view at the minute.

this is a sad day for the gaa. rte is its best promotional asset. access to sky is restricted to people who can afford it, rte is accessible to the nation. Its all well and good promoting the games abroad but how many people in manchester, liverpool or newcastle care about gaelic games or will get excited about watching a galway vs monaghan qualifiers. tis no harm bt sport out muscled them taking the champions league rights.anybody who thinks sky will do a better job than rte are delusional. i had to laugh when i saw who is the favorite to present these games. if this is what people think is better than michael lyster then they will be very surprised.

people championing the sky sports deal forget a lot of people work weekends and take late lunch breaks to watch games in the canteen on rte or tv3 they are hardly going to have sky in these canteens. this is typical attitude of many of the posters who work monday to friday and think the working world stops at 5pm friday evening, typical expectocrats. now the deal is signed i hope the gaa are going to show some extra money to the players for holiday funds etc rather than them having to have fundraising nights and begging to gather finance for their trips.

Great day for the Gaa, well done to all involved, finally a bit more exposure and comprehensive availability abroad.

RTE are once again the big winners for which I have no complaints, people in Ireland will still have free access to all 6 provincial finals, most of the AI series games bar 2 AI football quarter-finals and 31 out of 45 games total, not bad at all.

Skysports are now on board aswell (as expected) which I'm personally very happy with, it's all about getting it right now, I thought they'd get 2 provincial finals but 2 AI QFs are huge games aswell. They also get to show both hurling and football semi's and finals so those are huge games to market abroad, hopefully with the earlier rounds they will get a big game or two aswell, I don't think a Clare v Waterford Munster football QF would be a great way to start Sky's exclusive 14 Gaa games!

Channel 7 in Australia showing all 45 games free to air is huge aswell, with so many Irish living over there now it's great that those who've had to leave our shores will have such comprehensive coverage of our games, delighted for them. Also the link up with RTE Digital is great news for Irish people living across the globe.

Finally congratulations to Setanta and TG4, even though I've been critical of them in the past but fairplay to them for getting another deal tied up. Think the radio stations are more or less as was unless I'm mistaken.

Biggest Day in a long time for the GAA. I think Sky might actually put a bit of promotion and not just put it on sky sports 4 like the NBA and some of the tennis. I would love if the GAA became popular somewhat in England!! We could really be proud of our sport if it kicked off abroad. Can you imagine in a few years tours coming over to Ireland to go to the hurling or football. Maybe even a Championship opener in London or something. If Sky really get behind this we could be onto something big!

looks like in the UK we may be seeing less games than we did on Premier, Premier used show all the games shown by RTE and TV3, but now it looks like we will only get the games shown by Sky now, Premier used also show the league games and some club games.

Or alternatively you could go to the game? Or is that out of the question for some reason? Delighted by the announcements today (especially the channel 7 one). I've never even had Sky, nor do i plan on getting it (more accurately, paying for it) but i know this is a step in the right direction. Well done GAA, at least some things are being done well this year.

Yeah right,
We will just see what RTE will allow to be shown here in the states. Setanta has been ripping us off for years with their mandatory $20 per game at your local Irish pub or on the internet, I can see more of the same coming.

By that rationale, there's no need for any TV coverage. But in any case, I've gone on ad nauseum on this thread about what TV coverage of GAA during the summer means to older people who can't get to matches as easily any more, older people who don't have Sky, and ain't gonna be getting it any time soon. I'm probably wasting my time.

RTE did a pay per view deal out of this as well but the I see most people ignored that. I see RTE been worse than sky here.
