Predictions for winner of NFL Division 1?

Westmeath will go down followed by the losers of the Kerry v Mayo match which I suspect will be Kerry. Derry have performed better than I would have expected.

Are you living in Cork or something, GaryMc82 , or are you so interested in Cork you traveled all the way from Derry? Anyway, it'd be some man who would bet on Cork not winning one of the 5 remaining games, and I admire your bravery if not your wisdom.

No I live in Derry City ( Cityside ), not far from Celtic Park in fact. My Interest in Cork is purely based on my overall prediction of the National League Division 1.

Nah they have definitely come on leaps and bounds under Brian McIver. They are physically stronger, and tactically much stronger this year. Last years run through the qualifiers probably gave them more time to gel as a team, and they are a stronger team for it.

Long road ahead, as a strong league performance means nothing if you can't back it up come Championship time. Luckily we have an easy side of the Ulster Championship draw, with a Division 2 team in QF, and potentially a Division 3 team or Division 4 team in SF :-)

Ok, maybe that particular Division 2 side could be a bit of a banana skin on their day, but Derry should be confident.

Your appraisal of your own county is very honest. Fair play to you also to sticking to your predictions. I hope you are wrong of course but admire your bravery.

If I am honest, I would have predicted that Westmeath and Derry (not because you said Cork! - I am not that petty) would go down. Derry have surprised me with their win away to Kerry and they made an outstanding comeback against Tyrone to get the draw when it seemed lost.

I agree that you need six points to stay up. You have three. In your opinion, how many points will Derry end up with? Where do you think that those points will be garnered?

On another matter - are there any Derry city (small 'C' so not to confuse with soccer team) players in the squad at present? How strong is gaelic football there? I know you have Steelstown and Na Magha (they are just hurling?)..are there other teams?

I think Derry will beat Westmeath at home, which will be 5 points in total. Looking at the remainder of Derry's fixtures, I would target Kildare at home for 2 points. That would be 7 points, and possibly a SF spot.

A lot will depend on who qualifies for the League Semi final's first, as those teams may choose to give fringe players a run out in their remaining game or two, Which in theory might make those teams more beatable.

Kerry, Mayo or Kildare could still drop ahead of Cork. Really hard to know at the minute, as Mayo are depleted with Injuries and Kerry enter Round 3 with 0 points. Kildare had a good win over Mayo, but have a difficult run of games ahead.

As far as Kildare are concerned I would see the two matches in Newbridge as being very important as regards their future in Division 1, anything less than 2 points from them (assuming they will beat Westmeath in their final match, not a given by the way) and they will probably go down. I don't expect them to beat Dublin and their match against Derry will be a very difficult one but then again not unwinable. Anyway there's a lot of football to be played before we can say with any certainty who will make it to the semi finals and who will be relegated.

No City players in the senior panel at present, and of the top of my head I don't think at U21 level either. But I could be wrong on that. Gaelic football or the GAA in general is not very strong in the City, although in saying that, there are a few clubs and very committed GAA people. As the 4th largest City in Ireland, It's potential would be huge if tapped properly.

I feel a promotion drive to youth is needed, not simply in terms of coaching, but in terms of associating the county team with the City.

Cork certainly wont be relegated now.

Mayo without a win in two games, They need to get their act together soon or they will be in a relegation dogfight.

But i think they will sort themselves out.

Dublin, Cork, Tyrone and Kildare to reach the Semis. Kerry and Mayo to be 5th and 6th (not necessarily in that order) and Westmeath and Derry to go down.

from the squad! Derry where a bit like that band
Oasis there for a while, the brothers being all they
were remembered for!
I really do think Derry have a strong chance of winning
Ulster this year and showing well in the AI. Some of those
scores they are picking off are phenomenal. They'll get better
as the year goes on!

Derry are definitely going in the right direction, but we will need to wait and see. It one thing having a good League campaign, but backing it up come championship is very tricky. Some teams who look poor during the league, will be a very different type of beast during the Championship.

A cracking opener with Donegal on May 25th is on the cards though.

I think you are forgetting that Tyrone and Down will have already opened the Ulster Championship on the 18th May, a game equally as tasty, if not more.
