After watching the game lastnight it makes no sense to me why Monaghan gave the Tyrone team all of their kickouts. This tactic is never used anymore and any team who are looking to win the game will press up on atleast some of the other teams kickouts. Completely the managements fault for being bet lastnight. Total nonsense. If they had pushed up they would have been destroyed. Have you any football brain. They same tactic worked in other games, with the push up in the latter stages. Credible performance against a talented Tyrone team. A little luck and would have been in final. A few costly wides. All in all a good year for team and management. All gave improved as footballers and some should progress onto the Senior team in the near future, which is what it is all about at the end of the day. As I have said on a few occasions Monaghan football is in a good place.

It worked against Armagh last week, but I too was surprised to see it employed for most of the game. However, Tyrone is chock full of fast, strong attacking players. If the press is beaten, there's a very good chance that they would have easily cut through a dispersed Monaghan defence. What we saw last night was a very good Monaghan defence that generated repeated turnovers and ran a counter attacking game. It almost worked, a few more minutes would have been interesting It's just a pity, just like in Armagh game, we had such a reliance on one player for scores, albeit all from frees or marks. A bit more teeth in attack could have been a difference. TearsIn85 (Monaghan) - Posts: 208 - 25/04/2024 14:24:08 2540617 Link 0 |
Surely Max Mcginnity or Tommy Mallon could have made a difference here. Also an exceptional talent such as Niall Rice left sitting on bench when scores where at a premium seems strange to say the least updafaughs (Monaghan) - Posts: 56 - 25/04/2024 14:51:39 2540620 Link 0 |
Couldn't believe, they done this myself, everyone around me was saying the same thing .

I honestly thought the tactic worked. You are correct in that Tyrone has some very athletic runners like Shea O'Hare, Cormac Devlin etc to flood forward for a press would have been hugely risky. Defensively Monaghan were very good. Orgnaised, by and large disciplined in tackling Monaghan turned over Tyrone time and time again and forced Tyrone into shooting from low percentage scoring zones. It worked as Tyrone didn't have the players to score from those areas. Monaghan broke forward at pace and the only thing that let them down was some wild shooting from very scoreable positions. They had a lot of wides. Monaghan really should have had a least a draw in this game. You couldn't fault this U20 groups workrate and effort. I'd be heartened by what I seen last night for the upcoming future of Monaghan football , we've got some excellent players coming through from this particular U20 group, especially defenders and a couple of some marquee forwards. Also a pity that McQuillan and Conlon were out injured for this game. They definitely would have added something extra to this team. What's promising is that 6 of the starting team (plus the injured McQuillan and a couple of the subs) are available next year. And then you will have the pick of last year's outstanding minor team to add the mix. I'll be looking forward to the club championships to see how these players continue to develop. sleater (Monaghan) - Posts: 178 - 25/04/2024 15:44:58 2540629 Link 0 |
It essentially takes the strong middle third out of it. You try get their poorest player on the ball and leave your plus 1… they obviously watched their games and decided if they push up and lose the ball in the middle they are left man to man they are in trouble. If Derry had a Time Machine I don't think they would have pushed up last Sunday …

So your saying they shouldn't of pushed up when they were down by 4 with ten minutes to go when they had great chances to push the lockout after some of mooneys and still they say back and invited on pressure

Agree totally. Insane tactics & these talented players deserved better. It seems we always have good management teams in place at minor grade but when we move into under 20s, disaster strikes. Present county board have a lot to answer for. A big opportunity missed yesterday evening.

The first Tyrone kickout Monaghan pushed up on came after 57th minutes. We won it cleanly in midfield & scored a point. Mad not to press up for the last quarter at least ! The fight we had to get ball from our own kick outs was intense. Yet Tyrone were allowed take the ball up to our half back line the entire game. Tactically, only one team deserved to win.....and it wasn't Monaghan !

Agree 100%. Hopefully the clowns on here complaining are never let into management. It would get ugly.

You were obviously among a lot of "experts". Thankfully I was among supporters who understood exactly the reasons for the tactics.

Sad to read the nonsense that guys like you write, with obviously no clue about management and tactics. A case of ye don't know what ye don't know. Very successfully year for our Under 20s. Have moved way up the pecking order in Ulster since their time as Minors. Definitely down to management and coaching since. In that time they also lost one of their stars to the Ireland Under 20 Rugby panel. Far from slating our Co. Board, they actually need to be congratulated along with the coaching staff on where they have brought Monaghan football. Our coaching and competition structure the envy of many counties.

Our senior clubs and reserve football scene is falling apart rapidly and the county team is bombing towards becoming a division 3 side once a few retirements hit.
